Culture Shock
The good thing is that I didn't experience a huge culture shock. Except for the food, all the other things were quite “normal” or easy to get used to. Obviable you need to be flexible and to adapt to some situations. There are different ways of doing and acting but I’m sure that if you choose to come here in Shanghai you are ready for this amazing experience.
IMBA program
You can choose between 1st or 2nd year courses. I had three 1st year courses and two 2nd year course. The 2nd year courses are more focused and more advanced; the students have more experience and they generally work more efficiently. (but a bit less friendly)
The 1st-year courses are more basic, and some work projects are quite time- consuming but in the meantime the students are more enthusiastic, collaborative and open to meet the exchange students. Moreover, they organize more activities for exchange students and are more ready to make friends.
Living situation
I took an apartment in People square. It’s a nice area, full of restaurants, 3 metros and a lot of international students. If I could suggest you some areas maybe I would say: jing’an temple (also Jiansu lu) and xujiahui. You can find a good accommodation for around 4000 RMB per month (someone was able to find also around 3000 ). I suggest you come in shanghai 3/4days in advance and search for the room. Do not trust too much the pictures from site such as :smartshanghai if you don’t want to have some surprise.
Language Learning
SJTU provides free Chinese courses for exchange student, 2 times per week (basic level). I followed the course and I’m so happy for this decision. Firstly, it allows you to facilitate your experience in shanghai and then to learn more about the culture, in addition it allows you to find Chinese friends (they will appreciate a lot if you try to speak with them in Chinese)
Some tips for future exchange student
Try to enjoy this experience as soon as possible, Shanghai is an amazing city. It’s crazy and dynamic. You can try new activities, meet new friends from around the word, enjoy the bund (it’s so beautiful that you will fall in love immediately), try to new food (also strange one) and thanks to your amazing Chinese colleagues learn about Chinese culture step by step. THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!
