Long ago, two brothers went to the woods to look for food. They found a wild goose flying low in the sky. The two brothers were very happy and they ________ to shoot it.
The elder brother said that the wild goose would make a delicious stew (炖菜). The younger brother didn’t ________. “A stew is good,” he said. “But a wild goose will taste better if we roast (烤) it over a fire.” Both of them had their own ________ and they couldn’t reach an agreement. At last, they decided to ask a wise elder in their village for ________.
In the village, the elder listened to both sides, and then gave them his suggestion. “That’s ________,” he said, smiling. “Half will be stewed, and half will be roasted. This is the best way to make you both ________.”
The brothers were very glad. They quickly ________ to where they had seen the wild goose. Of course, the wild goose had already gone. Instead of enjoying a big ________ that evening, the two brothers had nothing to eat. If they had shot the wild goose first and then decided how to ________ it, they would have gone to bed with full stomachs that night.
From the story, we understand we should always decide what the most important thing is and do it first, ________ we will achieve nothing.

Life can be boring if we don’t have any dreams. Do you have any dreams?
My dad’s dream is to sail around the world. He often talks about it with his best friend.
This summer holiday, my father decided to borrow a boat with his best friend and take us all to a lake to test his skills.
They borrowed a big boat and began the journey on a sunny day. Everything went well on the first day. The water was calm. There was no wind. It felt like my dad’s dream was coming true.
But the next day, when we sailed to the river that connected to the lake, a strong wind came up. The boat started to bounce (上下晃动). It was a little scary. The mothers tried their best to hold the kids.
The river got wider and wider. And the waves became stronger. The wind was blowing our boat far from land. My dad had trouble controlling the boat. His best friend came to help but failed. They decided that we should go back.
We made it safely back to a place where the water was calm. Dad said, “Today we learned a good lesson. It is good to have dreams. But it is also important to properly prepare before trying to achieve them.”
Dad’s dream is still to sail around the world. He knows that dreams will come true if you really want them to. But he also knows that he has a lot to learn before setting out on the open sea.
Maybe you have seen amazing sunset clouds, a night sky full of bright stars, or a beautiful rainbow after a storm. Did any of those things make your jaw (下巴) drop? If so, you have felt awe (敬畏). This is a strong feeling of wonder or amazement. Many people feel a we in nature.
Virginia Sturm is a scientist at the University of California in the US. She led a study. Her goal was to see if it’s possible for people to feel more awe by taking “a we walks”.
The study looked at two groups of adults. Both groups were asked to walk outdoors for 15minutes once a week. They were told to pay attention to things around them and take photos of themselves during the walks.. They also had to answer daily questions about their feelings and send in their photos. But one group got extra (额外的) instructions. They were asked to try to look at things with awe. This went on for eight weeks.
At the end of the study, scientists found something interesting. The awe walkers felt happier than those in the other group. The faces in their pictures became smaller. They did not pay attention to themselves as much. They cared more about what was around them. Their smiles also became bigger over time. This didn’t happen with the other group.
Sturm said awe walks can be good for kids, too. “The walks are easy to do. You do not have to go somewhere new or take a big trip,” she said. “You can notice flowers or birds.”
Maryam Abdullah is a psychologist (心理学家) in California. She said a we walks might help people feel more connected to the world. “That is a healthy feeling for young people to experience,” Abdullah said.
China has become the world’s largest producer and market of EVs (电车). According to a report, 9.58 million Chinese-made EVs were produced and 9.49 million were sold in 2023. Among the total sales, 1.2 million EVs were exported (出口).
The Chinese government has been encouraging EVs as part of its effort for green, high-quality development. As a result, China’s EV industry develops very quickly. At Auto China 2004, BYD was the only company showing EVs there. At Auto China 2024, there were 278 different EV models on show, including BYD, SAIC, Geely, Li Auto, Nio, Xpeng and other brands.
China’s EV industry is now facing both challenges and chances. It’s reported that 71% of EV brands cut prices in 2023. EV makers without the ability of innovation (创新) will face growing risks. In order to be both green and smart, Chinese EV makers are trying hard to improve technologies like battery qualitics and AI support. At the same time, the government is adding even more charging points (充电站). On the other hand, more Chinese people are aware of the environmental problems. It is encouraging more buyers to choose EVs.
EVs are the way of the future. In an ideal world, everyone benefits from innovation and green transport. Some might get there sooner than others, and will gain greater rewards. It is very likely that China will hold the lead.
Hello, I’m David Smith. Now I’d like to share with you the story of how music has a strong influence on my life.
Have you ever faced a time when things looked dark and you had no hope at all? Two years ago, my body ached all the time. So I went to the doctor. I was told I had a serious illness which was difficult to cure. And I thought I didn’t have much longer to live. I was very afraid and I felt so lonely and discouraged.
Then one day, I had to go through a two-hour medical treatment. The doctor wanted me to relax, so she played some music for me, and one of the songs was Happy, which has been my favorite song till now. This positive and uplifting song gave me strength and helped me go through the darkness. From then on, I began to listen to music all the time. John A. Logan once said, “Music is the medicine of the mind.” And it’s true. Music worked wonders for me. It helped me recover and come back to life.
Of course, I hope none of you have to experience the same kind of suffering that I did. However, we all go through some periods when we feel sad or lonely. During those times, music can help you in the same way that it helped me. I hope all of you will value music and make it a part of your life.
